Health Care Employment

Health sector employment is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the country. While hospitals continue to employ the largest share of health sector workers, jobs in home health care and ambulatory care have grown faster.

While there was a decline in all employment sectors in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, health sector employment has started to rebound to pre-pandemic levels.

While hospitals continue to employ the largest share of health sector workers in New York State, jobs in home health care and ambulatory care have grown faster. Between 2000 and 2021, jobs in home health care more than doubled, while growth in ambulatory jobs (excluding home health care) increased by 42%.

It is projected that between 2020 and 2030, health sector employment in New York State will grow by over 22%, adding more than 300,000 jobs. The fastest expected growth will be in ambulatory care, which includes home health care. During the same time period, the number of home health and personal care aides is projected to increase by almost 40%, adding nearly 200,000 jobs. Between 2020 and 2030, the number of RN jobs is expected to grow by 17%, adding over 33,000 jobs.
